Door het grote succes betreffende Pokémon Red en Green, werden ze snel opgevolgd via Pokémon Blue, uitgerust betreffende betere graphics en klank. Zonder alang te veel promotie bleek juiste eind met dat jaar het het spel dit best verkochte spel van het jaar was. Daarom werden besloten het spel internationaal uit te bezorgen, omdat tevens daar succes werden verwacht. Ook in een Verenigde Staten en Europa sloeg het spel in als een bom, desalniettemin wel betreffende iets verdere promotie. Desalniettemin, in de Verenigde Staten en Europa kwamen enig Pokémon Red en Blue uit, beide op technologisch peil aangaande de Japanse Pokémon Blue. Pokémon Green is nimmer behalve Japan uitgekomen.
Op 29 januari 2004 werden er 2 nieuwe spellen gelanceerd in Japan: Pokémon FireRed en LeafGreen (Pokémon VuurRood en BladGroen). Deze spellen kwamen in Noord-Amerika uit op 9 september 2004, en bestaan de herziene versies met Pokémon Red en Blue. Hiermee werden die spellen op dit niveau met de derde generatie gebracht, en werd verder de draadloze methode van ruilen geoorloofd via de Wireless adapter. Verder kwam er een andere kleinere gebied uit in die spellen: de Sevii Islands. Deze spellen gaven verder een mogelijkheid teneinde de legendarische Pokémon Deoxys 2 andere vormen te geven, via deze naar ons bepaalde cartridge te sturen.

Ons tijdsysteem werden ingevoerd, wat in dit spel een dag/nachtritme gaf. Verder werden er ons geluksysteem ingevoerd om te peilen hoe happy een Pokémon was met bestaan of hoofdhaar trainer.
Enkele Pokémon mag een speler ook niet vangen, doch dien deze via remedie over oefening levels laten stijgen en zo laten evolueren.
Daarenboven komt alsnog ons volledige herziening betreffende de omgeving en dit verminderen aangaande foutjes uit een originele versies.
De anime begon met ons andere reeks, genaamd Advanced Generation series, die in Japan begon op dezelfde dag waarop de spellen uitkwamen. Een spellen kwamen zowat ons jaar later in Noord-Amerika uit. Heel wat in deze serie veranderde, zoals de introductie van ons ander personage, May, gebaseerd op hoofdhaar speltegenhangster.
